SUGGESTED ITINERARIES

Check out our adventures and tours for ideas and things to do in Lalibela. Below are some of our suggestions to make the most of your time in Lalibela.

ONE DAY: MORNING START

If you only have one day, we suggest that you start with the Classic Lalibela Church Tour and see the eleven rock-hewn churches with one of our guides. As the day can get hot, we suggest that you start early: the ticket offices open at 6am. You can do the first group of the churches in the morning.

It's often nice to take a break during the hotter part of the day and relax with lunch around noon. Your guide can help you to find a nice spot to eat and pick you up later when you're done. The churches reopen at 2pm and closes at 5pm, and the second group of the churches can be done during then.

For the early evening, we suggest one of our Sunset Tours. If you enjoy hiking, the Secret Sunset Trekking Tour is ideal for a bit of physical exercise rewarded by a wonderful view and a sunset beer at a secret location. If you prefer something a little less active, the Town Sunset Walking Tour will also offer you a different view of Lalibela with a relaxing beer as you watch the skies turn pink.

For two people: US$45 including guides to the churches and the sunset tour, tuk tuk, sunset beer(s). Church entrance fees excluded.

ONE DAY: AFTERNOON START (TWO HALF DAYS)

Many flights to Lalibela land between mid-morning and early afternoon. In this case, we suggest that you start with the Classic Lalibela Church Tour and try to get to the ticket office at 2pm to see the first group of churches.

For the early evening, we suggest either the Secret Sunset Trekking Tour if you enjoy hikes, or the Town Sunset Walking Tour if you are tired from travelling and want something more chilled.

You can then continue with the Classic Lalibela Church TourĀ in the morning of your second day. We again suggest an early start in order to be on time for your departure flight and to avoid the midday sun.

For two people: US$45 including guides to the churches and the sunset tour, tuk tuk, sunset beer(s). Church entrance fees excluded.

SATURDAYS

If you happen to be here on a Saturday, we highly recommend a trip to the Lalibela Saturday Markets. It offers a different slice of life to the churches, as traders from all around the region gather and sell their wares. Busy, fun, and a great chance to learn about the everyday of people. It can be done before or after the churches as the markets are close to the famous Bete Giorgis church.

For two people: US$60 including church guide, market tour and sunset tour/hike with tuk tuk, sunset beer(s), a (very!) local bar visit at the market. Church entrance fees excluded.

TWO DAYS/NIGHTS

If you have two days, we suggest that you begin with the ONE DAY MORNING START itinerary or the TWO HALF DAYS itinerary depending on your time of arrival.

For the second day, there are many options.

[A] If you are interested in hiking, we suggest the Asheton Maryam Monastery Tour, where you can enjoy views of Laibela and also see the monastery on the side of the mountain. The tour can be done on foot (steep hikes involved!). But if you are not interested in hiking, alternative transport can be arranged. The tour (on foot) takes around 3 hours which will give you time to explore Lalibela Town more extensively and relax. If you have not done one of the Sunset Tours yet, then the second evening would be a lovely time to explore the other tour.

[B] If you are extra keen on hiking and enjoy the outdoors, we suggest you start with the Asheton Maryam Monastery tour and continue to the Lalibela Hudad for lunch or coffee and hike back . The Lalibela Hudad is an eco-lodge and restaurant on the escarpment towards Mount Abuna Yusef. The hike is beautiful and of medium difficulty. This option can take between 6-8 hours all up.

[C] If you are interested in history and religion, and want to see something that's visually quite different from the Lalibela Churches, we suggest a visit to Yemrehanna Kristos, 42km from Lalibela. This is a unique church that pre-dates the Lalibela churches by approximately 80 years and is located in a large natural cave. If you leave in the morning, you can be back by the early afternoon or lunch time. The only way to visit Yemrehanna Kristos is by car.

[D] It is also possible to combine a tour of Asheton Maryam Monastery and Yemrehanna Kristos by car.

THREE OR MORE DAYS

If you have more time, we suggest you consider a combination of the options above and take things at a more relaxed pace.

You can also consider a longer exploration into the Abuna Yusef Mountains, with one or more overnight stays at the Lalibela Hudad or a village tukul with one of the families in the community.

We can also arrange alternative transport for you (mules etc) if you would like to see some of the Abuna Yusef Mountains with support and limited hiking.
